Protect Your Vision from the Impacts of Aging

Your eyes age, just like the rest of you. As your eyes grow older, your chances of developing an eye disease or other conditions rise. Some of these diseases include glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. But, even though your risk increases, that doesn’t mean you’re left unprotected.

At Russell West Optometry, we take it upon ourselves to help you protect your vision and eye health, and it all starts with a thorough eye exam.

If you believe you may be experiencing problems with your vision, or you’re looking to be proactive about your eye health, start with a comprehensive eye exam. Please, book yours today!

Why Are Eye Exams Important?

Eye exams are the foundation of which all eye care stands. What we mean by this is that the very first steps we need to take to help safeguard your vision starts with an eye exam.

To help get the best possible protection for your vision, The Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) recommends having an eye exam once every 2 years. However, most optometrists recommend annual eye exams.

Some common eye problems that could occur as part of the ageing process include, but are not limited to:

Many eye diseases typically don’t exhibit symptoms in their early stages, making them incredibly difficult to detect by yourself. Eye exams can help spot these problems before they damage your vision.

Eye exams not only detect problems that may occur with your eyes, but they can also detect issues with your overall health, including high blood pressure and diabetes.

What Happens During an Eye Exam?

When you come in for an eye exam, we make it our mission to help ensure your experience with us is relaxing and comfortable.

Once we have you in the office, we’ll have a quick chat about your eye health and health history. If you have any concerns or questions about your eye health or about the eye exam itself, feel free to ask us! The more information you can provide about your eye health, the better we can tailor the exam to match your needs.

Once we wrap up our quick chat, it’ll be time to move on to assessing your visual strength and acuity. These assessments will help us verify your prescription and determine if you need glasses or contact lenses to see clearly.

Next, we’ll look at how healthy your eyes are. To ensure we are as thorough as possible, we use the latest in eye care technology. Some of the tools we’ll use include optical coherence tomography, fundus photography, non-contact tonometry, and Perkins and Goldmann tonometry.

Each tool helps detect signs of eye issues, including glaucoma and diabetes.

To wrap up the exam, we’ll recommend any medications or prescriptions to preserve or correct your vision. If you need contact lenses or glasses, we will send you over to our fabulous optical team!

Glasses & Contact Lenses

Glasses can be a great way to express your unique personality and style. We offer an extensive yet carefully curated collection of frames from world-class designers, and our optical team always makes sure they have their finger on the pulse so we can stay up to date with the latest fashion trends and looks.

Our dispensing team will also take detailed measurements of your head to help ensure your glasses will sit comfortably while you wear them.

If you’re interested in contact lenses, your optometrist will need to assess your eyes to see if they are a candidate for contact lenses and budget time to perform a few extra tests and measurements. If you are a good candidate, your optometrist will and help you choose which design and type they think is best suited to your unique needs.

Our Optometrists and Opticians will work with you to fit and if necessary, teach you how to insert, remove and clean your contact lenses
